1.  How do I read my prescription?

When you buy eyeglasses online, entering your eyeglasses prescription accurately is extremely important. On a typical prescription, you will see two sets of rows.  The most common format is that the top portion is for your right eye (“OD”) while the bottom portion is for your left eye (“OS”).

For most prescriptions, there should always be a value under “Sphere.”

For Reading-only correction, there should always be a value under sphere and most of the time it is positive. If there is a value under Near Vision (N.V., N.V.O.) then enter the power in the BOTTOM half of the form and leave the ADD power blank or ("0.00").

For astigmatism correction, please note that that Cylinder (CYL) and Axis are always provided together. If there is a Cylinder value, there MUST also be a corresponding Axis value. Some doctors use a “Plus” cylinder notation format, and some use “Minus” cylinder.  The difference between the two is important, so please be very careful when entering your prescription!  Enter all positive and negative signs PRECISELY as they appear.  If you don't have astigmatism correction, doctors might just leave it blank or simply SPH or DS which means Sphere or Diopters Sphere. Axis should be from 1-180 degrees, if you see a value like '5' under axis, this is also the same as '005' or '5 degrees'. It should always be a whole number and there should no be decimal point on the axis.

For Bifocals and Progressive lenses, please check with your eye doctor whether the Addition is for Bifocals or Progressive. Most of the time, compared to the Bifocal Addition, the Addition of the Progressive is higher by 0.25, so please verify. An indication to know if your prescription is for Progressive, is a PAL note written on the prescription. Only one ADD, means the addition for the Left and Right eyes are the same.

Eye Doctors will sometimes leave out the decimal point on the Sphere, Cylinder and Addition. For example, -25 or +175, this is understood to represent -0.25 and +1.75.  If you are unsure, please feel free to call our customer service line for assistance.

2.  What is a "PD" and why is it important?

This is the distance between your pupils, and it is crucial to crafting a quality pair of glasses.  We use this measurement to ensure that the “Optical Center” of the lens is placed directly in front of your pupil, and to make sure that any bifocal area is placed accurately in your field of view.  Without this, we simply cannot get your prescription accurate enough.

Sometimes doctors will provide two different values for a PD.  In these cases, please note:  If the values are higher like 65/60, the first PD is usually for Distance PD and the second is for Reading PD.  If the values are lower like 33.5/31.5, the first PD is for the Right Eye and the second is for the Left Eye.  In either of these two cases, please enter these values in the provided text field.  If the values are the same like 30.5/30.5; you can add these two values together and enter them in the drop-down box labeled “PD.”

3.  How do I obtain my PD?

We recommend that you obtain this when you get your yearly eye exam.  For adults, this rarely changes.  For children and adolescents, it may change yearly.  It is not always recorded on your prescription, so you may need to ask for this measurement to be taken.

If you did not receive this measurement on your yearly visit, try going back to the Doctor or a nearby optician to obtain this measurement.  Their method of measuring is most accurate, and will therefore result in your prescription being accurate.

If this is not feasible for you, you may ask someone to help you by measuring it for you.  Have them stand about an arm's length away from you and measure with a simple ruler. You can also measure by yourself by facing a mirror.  In both cases, measure from the center of one pupil to the center of the other pupil.  Make sure this distance is in millimeters!  It’s important to focus your eyes straight ahead, as if you were looking off into the distance.

4.  How do I obtain my prescription?

Your optician or eye doctor is required by law to provide you with a copy of your prescription. Be sure to ask for a clear and legible copy (and make sure to request your PD at the same time!!).

5.  How long will it take to receive my order?

Depending on the type and strength of prescription, and lens options selected, normal orders will take up to seven (7) days for us to process.  An additional 2-3 days is required for UPS Ground shipping.  So most orders will be received on or before 14 days.

6. Can I use my contact lens prescription for ordering glasses with you?

No.  Prescriptions for contact lenses often vary when compared with prescriptions for glasses. Make sure the prescription you have specifically matches your need for glasses.

7. Can we have lenses both tinted and photochromic?

Lenses are either photochromic, where the degree of the tint changes, or constant tint, depending on what you wish to have. There is one product available that combines the two options together, but most people do not prefer this type once they have tried it.  The available color is a slight yellow-ish tint.  If you strongly desire this type of lens, please call us for pricing and availability.

8.  Are there any limitations for Bifocals or Progressive lens?

Yes, not all frames can accommodate a Bifocal or Progressive or lens.  We have created a “Bifocal” category to showcase all the frames that can accommodate Bifocal lenses.  Also, if you don’t see any bifocal lens options available for a given frame, that means the frame cannot accommodate a bifocal lens.  If you need more advice, please contact our Customer Service Department.

9.  What is a “Lens Index?”

Simply put, a lens’ index refers to how thin it will tend to be with a given prescription.  The higher the index, the thinner the lens material.  Stronger prescriptions will look better in higher index materials.

In more detail, the index refers to the amount of light transmission that can occur through a given amount or thickness of a particular material.  So with a lower index CR-39, at an index of 1.49, more material thickness is required to achieve the given prescription.  A higher index 1.67 requires less material for the same prescription.
